Affordable Housing Options: Public Housing and Rental Assistance Public Housing Units: Providing Independence and Affordability The Flint Housing Commission takes pride in owning a total of 1248 Conventional Public Housing Units, including 133 conveniently located scattered sites across the city. Supported by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Public Housing is an initiative that allows seniors, disabled individuals, and families to enjoy independent living at affordable rates. Income limits set by HUD determine eligibility, with lower income limits at 80% and very low income limits at 50% of the median income for the area. Rent is calculated based on 30% of all income received, with the possibility of excluding certain income sources. To further assist our residents, a variety of Resident Services are available, designed to promote self-sufficiency and well-being. Visit us at the Flint Housing Administration Building, situated at 3820 Richfield Road, Flint, MI 48506, from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Our staff will provide you with a paper application, ensuring that you can start your housing journey hassle-free. Rental Assistance with Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers: Find Your Ideal Home The Flint Housing Commission is proud to administer approximately 700 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers, offering another avenue for affordable housing. With these vouchers, participants have the opportunity to reside in privately owned rental units, with the commission subsidizing the rent based on the difference between 30% of their income and the monthly rental charge. These vouchers cover the entire Genesee County, providing a wide range of housing options. As a voucher holder, you have the freedom to select a unit with a higher monthly rent than the HUD guidelines, but you will be responsible for paying the difference between the subsidy amount and the rent, as well as any utilities.
