About This Building

Office Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 - 4:00 Overview of Public Housing: The objective of public housing is to offer suitable and secure rental housing options to eligible families, elderly individuals, and persons with disabilities. The management of these housing facilities, where residents can afford the rent, is coordinated by local housing agencies (HAs) under the supervision of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD provides technical and professional support for the planning, development, and administration of these housing developments. Eligibility Criteria for Public Housing: Public housing is available for families and households with income qualifications, as well as disabled and elderly individuals. The determination of eligibility by our housing authority is based on several factors, including annual gross income, family status, and criminal history. Housing Choice Voucher Program: Please note that the Section 8 Waiting List is currently closed. Understanding Housing Choice (Section 8) Vouchers: The housing choice voucher program is a significant federal initiative aimed at assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities in acquiring safe and decent housing in the open market instead of subsidized housing developments. Through this program, rental assistance is provided on behalf of the family/household or individual, enabling them to choose from privately-owned housing options such as single-family homes, apartments, and mobile homes. Participants have the freedom to select any housing that meets the program's requirements. The rent paid by a family/household is calculated based on adjusted household income, and it is determined by the greater of 30% of adjusted monthly income, 10% of gross monthly income, or a minimum rent of $50.00. Once a suitable home is chosen and approved by the authority, the family/household will sign a lease with the property owner and fulfill any necessary security deposit requirements. The head of the household will be responsible for ensuring that utilities are transferred to their name before signing the lease. Eligibility Requirements for Rental Voucher: MHA determines eligibility for a rental voucher based on the total annual gross income and family/household size. The family/household income should not exceed the very low-income level set for the Knoxville Metropolitan Area. Detailed income limits can be found at http://www.huduser.org/portal/datasets/il.html on HUD's website. Additionally, all individuals aged 18 or older will undergo a criminal background check, and any criminal history may lead to the denial of the application.
